Content Gap (AI answers)
In AI visibility, a content gap is a buying question that AI engines answer by naming your competitors but not you, usually because your website has no page stating the specific service, price, location, or detail the engine needed.
Also known as: Answer gap, Visibility gap
A content gap is a question you should be the answer to and aren't. A homeowner in Chandler asks Perplexity who installs tankless water heaters and what it costs. The answer names three plumbers with a price range each. You install tankless heaters every week, but your website has a single services page that says water heaters with no detail, no price, and no mention of tankless. The engine had nothing to work with, so it named the plumbers whose pages did.
Gaps are found by tracking, not guessing. Run the buying questions for your trade and cities against each engine repeatedly, record who gets named, and look for the questions where competitors appear consistently and you don't. Then check the cited sources in those answers. If competitors are being cited from their own pages on that exact topic, the gap is content. If they're being cited from Yelp or Angi, the gap is a listing. The two need different fixes.
Google's query fan-out makes content gaps more specific than they used to be. Because AI Mode and AI Overviews split one question into several sub-searches, a page that answers one narrow sub-question can get cited even when your site doesn't rank for the broad topic. Ahrefs found the share of AI Overview citations from top-10 pages fell from 76% to 38% between July 2025 and March 2026 and attributes the drop to fan-out. The specific page wins where the broad page used to.
For a small business, closing a gap is usually one page. Not a blog post about the history of tankless heaters; a page that says you install them, in which cities, roughly what it costs, how long it takes, and which brands you carry, in plain text. A dentist's gap might be a page on same-day crowns with a price range. A law firm's might be a page on flat-fee uncontested divorce in their county. The engine needs a source that states the answer, and you can be that source.
Tibly surfaces content gaps as Actions: prompts where competitors are named and you aren't, with the cited sources that explain why. When the fix is a page, Tibly drafts it from your business details and publishes it to your Tibly-hosted site, then keeps tracking the prompt so you can see whether the gap closes in later scans.

- Competitor Benchmark (AI answers)A competitor benchmark in AI answers is a side-by-side comparison of how often each business in a market gets named for the same buying questions on the same engines, revealing who holds the slots you don't and why.
- Query Fan-OutQuery fan-out is the technique Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode use to split one search into several related sub-queries and build one answer from the combined results, so cited pages often don't rank for the original query.
- Prompt TrackingPrompt tracking is the practice of running a fixed set of buying questions against AI engines on a schedule, recording which businesses each answer names and which sources it cites, so visibility becomes a per-engine trend.
- Topical AuthorityTopical authority is the depth and consistency with which a website covers one subject, shown by many specific, accurate pages on related questions, so search engines and AI systems treat the site as a reliable source for the whole topic.
Common questions about Content Gap (AI answers)
- How do I find content gaps for AI answers?
- Track the buying questions for your trade and city on each engine and note where competitors are named repeatedly and you're absent. Then look at what sources the engine cited for those competitors. If it's their own pages on that topic, you're missing a page. Tibly does this and lists the gaps as Actions.
- Does closing a content gap guarantee I'll be named?
- No. It gives the engine a source it didn't have before, which is necessary but not sufficient. Engines also weigh listings, reviews, and consistency across sources. Nobody has measured how often a single new page flips an answer, so publish it, keep tracking the prompt, and judge by the trend over a few weeks.
