AI Search
AI search is any search experience where an AI model reads sources and writes a direct answer to your question, as in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot, instead of returning a ranked list of links.
Also known as: Generative search, AI-powered search
AI search is the umbrella term for search experiences where a model generates the answer. You type or say a question, the system retrieves relevant pages, and it writes back a paragraph or two that names a few options and cites a few sources. ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Microsoft Copilot all fit the description. The individual products are often called answer engines.
The mechanics differ from classic search in one important way. Classic search ranks pages and lets you choose. AI search chooses for you, then explains the choice. When a homeowner in Tampa asks who fixes a slab leak, Google's ten blue links become two or three named plumbers in a sentence. The businesses that don't make that sentence don't exist for that query.
It's still early in terms of raw volume. AI platforms account for about 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026, up from 0.24% in 2025 and 0.02% in 2024, while organic search is around 42.75%, according to Similarweb-family data. But usage for buying decisions is growing faster than the traffic numbers suggest: BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 45% of US consumers used AI tools like ChatGPT for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6% the year before.
For a restaurant, dentist, or law firm, the shift matters because AI search is unforgiving about facts. It wants your hours, your prices, your service area, and your specialties stated plainly somewhere it can read. If those facts live only in a PDF menu or a phone call, the model fills the gap with a competitor whose site says it outright.
Tibly measures your presence in AI search directly. It generates the buying questions people ask in your trade and cities, runs them daily across seven engines, and tracks how often you're named, where in the answer you appear, how warmly you're described, and which sources the engines cited. - Answer EngineAn answer engine is an AI system, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews, or Copilot, that responds to a question with a direct written answer naming a small number of options instead of a page of ranked links.
- AI VisibilityAI visibility is how consistently a business gets named when AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity answer a customer's buying question, measured across repeated prompts and multiple engines rather than a single check.
- Conversational SearchConversational search is looking for information by asking an AI system full questions in natural language and refining with follow-ups in the same thread, as in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Mode, rather than typing short keywords.
- Zero-Click SearchA zero-click search is a query where the user gets what they need from the results page itself, such as an AI Overview, map pack, or knowledge panel, and never visits a website, earning a business visibility but no visit.
Common questions about AI Search
- Is AI search replacing Google?
- Not by traffic. Organic search still drives about 42.75% of website visits versus roughly 0.32% from AI platforms, according to Similarweb-family data. But Google itself now includes AI Overviews and AI Mode, so the line between AI search and Google search is blurring from the inside.
- How do I know if AI search mentions my business?
- Ask the engines the questions your customers would ask, repeatedly, and record who gets named. One prompt run once tells you little; the same answer can change between runs. Tibly automates this across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, and Claude, and offers a free starting report.
- Is AI search the same thing as an answer engine?
- Nearly. AI search is the category of experience; an answer engine is one product that delivers it, like Perplexity or ChatGPT. People use the terms interchangeably. The distinction that matters more is between AI search and classic search, since one writes the answer and the other lists links.
