Agentic Commerce
Agentic commerce is buying that happens inside an AI conversation, where the assistant finds the product or service, compares options, and completes the purchase or booking for the user, as with ChatGPT's Instant Checkout or Thumbtack bookings in ChatGPT.
Also known as: Conversational commerce, AI checkout, In-chat booking
Agentic commerce is the moment the AI stops recommending and starts transacting. Instead of naming three options and linking out, the assistant lets the user pick one and pay, book, or order right there in the conversation. The seller's website may never be visited. The transaction still happens on the seller's systems, but the storefront is the chat.
OpenAI has moved furthest in public. Its Instant Checkout feature lets a shopper buy from participating merchants inside ChatGPT. On the services side, Thumbtack was integrated into OpenAI's Operator in January 2025 and into ChatGPT for home-services booking in October 2025, so a user asking about a handyman can book one through Thumbtack without leaving ChatGPT. No data-licensing agreement between Thumbtack and OpenAI has been published, and neither company has released numbers on booking volume, so how much business flows this way is unmeasured.
For a small business, this changes the meaning of visibility. In classic search, being found led to a visit, and the visit led to a sale on your terms. In agentic commerce, being recommended can lead straight to a booking, but the booking may route through an aggregator like Thumbtack rather than your own site, with that aggregator's fees and terms attached. The business that can take the booking or payment directly, on its own domain, keeps the customer relationship and the margin.
The preparation is concrete. Have online booking or checkout that works without a phone call, since an agent can't call you. State prices in plain text so the assistant can quote them. Keep your Thumbtack, Yelp, and Google profiles accurate, because those are the integrations engines are wiring up first. And measure whether you're being recommended at all, because agentic commerce only reaches businesses the assistant already names.
Tibly's angle is that the same site that gets you named can also take the transaction. A Tibly-hosted site runs payments, invoices, an online store, and booking on the business's own domain, so a recommendation from an AI answer has somewhere direct to land. The visibility scans tell you whether you're being recommended; the site makes sure that when you are, the customer can act on it with you.

- AI AgentAn AI agent is an AI system that doesn't just answer a question but takes actions on the user's behalf, such as browsing websites, comparing options, booking an appointment, or completing a purchase, working through multiple steps toward a goal.
- Aggregator (directory site)An aggregator is a third-party directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack, Healthgrades, or Avvo that collects listings and reviews for many businesses in a category, and AI engines frequently cite them when recommending local businesses.
- Brand Mention (AI answer)In an AI answer, a brand mention is any instance where the engine names your business in its response, with or without a link, distinct from a citation, which is a source the engine used and may not be yours.
- Answer EngineAn answer engine is an AI system, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews, or Copilot, that responds to a question with a direct written answer naming a small number of options instead of a page of ranked links.
Common questions about Agentic Commerce
- Can customers book my services through ChatGPT?
- If you're on Thumbtack, possibly. Thumbtack was integrated into ChatGPT for home-services booking in October 2025. There's no general mechanism for an independent business to plug its own booking into ChatGPT yet. Outside those integrations, the assistant links to your site, so your own booking flow still matters.
- How much business comes through agentic commerce today?
- Nobody has published numbers. OpenAI has launched Instant Checkout and booking integrations, but neither OpenAI nor Thumbtack has disclosed transaction volume, and AI platforms overall drive about 0.32% of website traffic per Similarweb-family data. Treat it as a direction to prepare for, not a current lead source.
