How to move your website off Wix

Search for how to leave Wix and you will find the same answer everywhere: there is no export, so you have to rebuild from scratch. The first half is true. Wix has never offered a way to export your site, and that is a deliberate product decision rather than an oversight. The second half stopped being true. A builder that can read your live site does not need Wix to hand anything over, because everything you published is already on the public internet. Here is how that works, what still needs rebuilding, and how to keep your domain and email through the move.

Wix has the largest app ecosystem of any website builder, and if your business depends on a specific Wix app that does exactly what you need, that is a real reason to stay. It is also genuinely capable: the editor gives you pixel-level control, which some owners enjoy. The reasons people leave are just as consistent. That same pixel-level control means every change is a layout decision, so small updates become projects and the site stops getting touched. The site cannot leave, which starts to feel less like a feature and more like a hostage situation once you have outgrown the platform. And nothing in Wix tells you whether the site is working, in the sense that matters now: whether customers asking ChatGPT or Gemini for a business like yours ever hear your name.

Not as a website, no. Wix offers no way to download your site's pages, design, or templates in any usable form, and no third-party tool changes that in a way that produces something you can edit. What Wix does let you export is data, in pieces: your contacts as a CSV, your store products as a CSV, and your blog posts. Worth grabbing, and not the same thing as your site. The practical route is different and better. Your site is already published, so a builder that snapshots the live page can lift the copy, the photos, the colors, the fonts, and the section structure directly, no cooperation from Wix required. You paste your address, and what comes back is your site as editable pieces rather than a blank template.

1. Export your data first, while you still have an account: contacts, store products, blog posts, and any form submissions. This is the only genuinely irreversible part of leaving Wix.
2. Import your site by pasting its address. Copy, photos, services, testimonials, contact details, and your section layout come across as pieces you can edit by clicking them.
3. Match your page addresses where you can. Wix sites built in the last several years use normal addresses like /about, so keep them identical. Older Wix sites are a special case covered below.
4. Rebuild the systems: your contact form destination, booking if you use Wix Bookings, and your store if you sell. Products can be imported automatically, up to 30 of them, though they stay staged until you connect Stripe.
5. Point your domain at the new site. If you bought the domain through Wix, you can leave it registered there and change its DNS records, or transfer it out once the site move has settled.
6. Verify from your phone on cellular data, then cancel your Wix Premium plan about a week later. Wix bills annually on most plans, so check your renewal date first.

If you bought your domain through Wix, it is registered to you, not to Wix, and you have two ways forward. You can leave it registered at Wix and change its DNS records to point at your new site, which is the fastest path and keeps everything else untouched. Wix keeps a DNS editing screen behind an advanced toggle in your domain settings. Or you can transfer it to another registrar, which is worth doing eventually if you would rather not keep a Wix relationship at all, but should happen after the site move rather than during it. Note that Wix, like every registrar, cannot release a domain in its first 60 days. Email is a separate matter and usually safe: Wix resold Google Workspace mailboxes, and pointing your website elsewhere does not disturb email as long as you only change the two website records and leave MX records alone.

Anything that is code or stored data rather than a published page. Velo, the custom code layer some Wix sites use for calculators, custom forms, and database-driven pages, does not transfer and has no equivalent to import into. Wix apps installed from the App Market do not transfer, so anything an app was doing needs a plan on the new platform. Your Wix Bookings history, member area, and stored customer records stay in Wix, which is why exporting first is step one rather than step six. Booking on the new site is a feature you enable and connect to Google Calendar, not appointment history that migrates. Everything that was a page of content, which for most small business sites is nearly the whole site, comes across.

Keeping your domain and your page addresses protects almost all of it, and for a lot of Wix sites the move is a net gain. Wix pages carry a heavy amount of the platform's own markup, which is not a ranking penalty in itself but does bury the plain, quotable answers that search engines and AI assistants lift into results. A page that states what you do, where you do it, and what it costs, in ordinary sentences, is easier for an engine to quote than the same information spread across styled elements. That is a content change rather than a platform change, but platforms decide whether content changes actually happen. A site you can update in seconds gets updated.
